The Presidents' Rap: From Washington to Clinton
Published in Audio Cassette by Sara Jordan Publishing (January, 2001)
Authors: Blaine Selkirk and Sara Jordan
Average review score:

Amazing Resource for Teaching Kids About the Presidents!
I am not a music teacher. I teach 5th grade American History. Over the past few years, every single fifth grade student in my school has memorized this entire cassette which covers all of the Presidents! We do this by preparing these songs as a "musical show" each year in honor of Presidents' Day.

In my 20 years of teaching, this still proves to be the most exciting and well liked musical I have ever directed. What makes this especially interesting as a performance, is that each song is written in the style of the historical period, so although the kids may be rapping information about the Presidents, they are singing in classical, gospel, light opera, rock and pop styles.

Well done! Our school year wouldn't be the same without it!

Bone Up On The Dinosaur Hunters
Reading Between The Bones: The Pioneers of Dinosaur Paleontology by Susan Clinton is not as good as Pioneers Of Geology, her more recent work written in collaboration with Margaret W. Carruthers [if that one is a 5 star book, this one should get 4.5 stars], but is still a very good book. The book covers an eclectic and excellent selection of paleontologists, starting with Georges Cuvier, the first paleontologist, and concludes with Jack Horner, a model for the paleontologist in the first Jurassic Park movie. I am glad Cuvier is included. Even though Cuvier was the first paleontologist and convinced the scientific community of the validity of extinctions, he is often vilified in geology texts as an unscientific Catastrophist. [This is a misrepresentation of Cuvier and the Catastrophists, who were not unscientific. They were just wrong about certain aspects of Earth history.] The section on Roy Chapman Andrews [a model for Indiana Jones] includes equal billing for Walter Granger, the paleontologist with the Central Asiatic Expeditions, which gives the reader a better idea of what went on during those classic expeditions to the deserts of Mongolia. The book includes a Geologic Time Scale, a good bibliography, and an index, but lacks a glossary. Reading Between The Bones would have benefitted from the subsections and subtitles used in Pioneers of Geology, which made the later book easier to read. My few reservations do not negate the fact that this book should be on the shelves in every elementary school and middle school library in the country and would be a killer gift for the budding dinosaur hunter, especially those who are not ready for the more advanced books written by Jack Horner and others. I recommend you dig up a copy of Reading Between The Bones.

The Rhetoric of First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton: Crisis Management Discourse (Praeger Series in Political Communication)
Published in Hardcover by Praeger Publishers (30 January, 2001)
Author: Colleen Elizabeth Kelley
Average review score:

An excellent examination of current rhetorical strategy
Kelley has presented her readers with a thorough academic examination of Hillary Rodham Clinton's rhetorical strategies in various situations. While this isn't the book for someone looking for light reading, it is a wonderful research tool. I particularly recommend the book to those interested in truly delving into the depths of the manner in which current political figures use discourse to shape the public's image.

The book provides a consideration of the communicative role of the American First Lady throughout the nation's history. Kelley then continues by backing up her assertions with specific examples of Clinton's rhetorical acts regarding various scandals including Whitewater, Travelgate, as well as her husband's impeachment and sexual scandals.

Kelley's look into Hillary Rodham Clinton's use of rhetorical strategies is a useful and interesting frame through which to view current political figures. Her findings and depth of research will provide her reader with an insightful understanding of how political figures manipulate their environments, the media, and the nation.

Running in Place: How Bill Clinton Disappointed America
Published in Paperback by Andrews McMeel Publishing (March, 1996)
Author: Richard Reeves
Average review score:

Quite Good, In Spite Of Some Flaws
A well written, brief and entertaining attack on Clinton from a mainstream leftist. Richard Reeves, a long time President watcher (starting with JFK) provides an excellent explanation of the forces swirling around the Clinton administration that helped form the policies of the President, but he seems to have missed the truth about the man himself. Reeves suggests that Clinton was unaware that he was signing up with the conservative mainstream elements of his party, in fact Clinton has always been a leader of those very forces. Needless to say, Reeves seems a bit naive, largely because he seems to have accepted Clinton's claims to be a 'liberal' (in the misused American meaning) based on Clinton's own protestations. In fact, Clinton has acted just as one would expect a 'new democrat' to act, as an unapologetic big business toady. Still, the errors of interpretation do not mar the analysis of what happened, nor the excellence of the writing. Like any book by Reeves, it is a must for serious President watchers and a great brief for those with a passing interest in Bubba. All in all, a five star book that will strain neither your checkbook nor your calendar. I was disappointed by the lack of an index. Highly recommended.

Speaking of Hillary : A Readers' Guide to the Most Controversial Woman in America
Published in Hardcover by White Cloud Press (01 June, 2000)
Author: Susan K. Flinn
Average review score:

Hilary Clinton as viewed by her peers
This is simply put a superbly crafted anthology of pieces about the first lady as viewed by the people who know her best. The editor, Susan Flinn has brought together people who have not only interacted extensively with Mrs. Clinton--they also demonstrate remarkable insights into what makes Hilary tick. Emergent from this process is a picture of Mrs. Clinton that is at once both authentic and complex. I particularly enjoyed the final essay by former Congresswoman Pat Shroeder, "You Go Girl."

If you are interested in understanding a large part of why the past eight years shaken out, then you should immediately purchase this book.

Spiritual Gifts
Published in Paperback by Christian Pubns (July, 1996)
Author: Bobby Clinton
Average review score:

detail workup of each spirtitual gifts
A reference book on the Spiritual Gifts- not meant to be picked up and read from cover to cover. Detailed study of each gift giving greek word and meaning, biblical examples of use, comments, test questions on each gift (both experientially & pyschologically), and an excellent section on how to develop each gift. The book is weak on providing biblical framework on purpose of the gifts and if all the gifts are relevant today but if one reads this and the Grudem book (Are Miraculous Gifts For Today? 4 Views) they will have excellent in-depth material on the gifts.

The Starr Evidence
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Pocket Books (September, 1998)
Authors: Bill Clinton, Phil Kuntz, Monica Lewinsky, Kenneth Starr, and United States Court of Appeals (District of Columbia Circuit) Division
Average review score:

Easy to read & informative;the other side of the coin
It's been interesting, especially today, the final day of thecongressional impeachment hearings; to be able to look up thesespecific items on this book and of course, the starr report. Objective interpretation, is not as difficult as you would think, if you considered the $MONEY$ involved. Interesting as it may be to some, and equally exciting or disgusting to others, I know in my heart that no REPUBLICAN is going to walk away clean. They have been the ones to force me to lock out news channels (i.e. Fox) because I didn't appreciate my young sons watching cartoons in the afternoon, with newsbreaks busting in with "B*'s" and the like. In order to throw dirt, you must get dirty; the Republicans have wallowed in it for too long and it is obvious they are not concerned with the conduct of the OIC, our opinions, our hard earned dollars, or the supposed conservative people they represent, like me. If you don't like a dog, fine. If the dog is down, don't be seen kicking him. You look worse than that bad dog. Remember folks, someones watching.
